There's something incredibly awesome to me about a huge-scale conflict that pits hopelessly outnumbered good against big gobs of pure evil. This one was actually inspired by the Krikkit Wars from Douglas Adams' "Life, the Universe, and Everything". I thought it would be neat to have something like that going on in the background of a story and before long it had taken center stage in my mind. The story started with a sentence that popped into my head - "Alicia Parkinson stared out her bedroom window and sighed". Everything took off from there.
It seemed for a long time as if this story would get finished, but now that I re-read it, it's so poorly written that I can't get past the first twenty pages. My attempt to blatantly rip off Douglas Adams' writing style resulted in a mostly incomprehensible jumble of excessive wordage. Still, several elements made their way into "Space Girls", including the war around which the plot revolves, which will feature more heavily in the sequel, if it ever gets written.
By the way, the two brief unflattering references to atheism are and always were jokes inspired by "Bloom County". I have to include that disclaimer because atheists bash religion to their hearts' content and then cry foul if anyone says anything negative about them.
