A Poetry Writing assignment from Fall 2015. It's about this girl that I used to see at Religion in Life and other places, and though I never spoke to her she stood out in a crowd and resonated with me so that I developed a crush on her from afar. We made eye contact once. That was intimidating. And then one day I unexpectedly met her because she was in my Latin class. This was the first poem that I shared with my group for them to critique. I had forgotten that I would have to share it with them, and had I remembered, I would have written something else altogether. Their feedback was very positive, though. One girl wrote "I think we've all felt this way so I found it really relatable." The other male (besides me) in my group remarked, "Man, this is the kind of ---- that goes through my head everyday." In response to the last line, the other girl wrote "WHAT!@*!@#!"

Wavy black hair
Lean angular face
Hypnotic brown eyes
Attributes of a goddess
No, not a goddess. Just a normal person, like you.
Sure, whatever.
So beautiful I can hardly wrap my mind around it; yet I shall only admire her from a distance, as I am unworthy to meet, let alone speak to –
No. Stop it. She is not better than you. You are not unworthy. Stop putting her on a pedestal.
I can’t help it. It’s how I’m wired.
Well, you need to get over it. It’s not healthy.
There she is, unexpectedly, in my new class
Ohmygosh ohmygosh ohmygosh
Calm down. It’s not a big deal. She’s just a person. No need to be so nervous.
Ohmygosh
She just spoke to me
Why? Does she not realize that I am beneath her?
No! Shut the heck up! You are not beneath her! She is not above you! Get that through your thick neurotic skull already!
But she’s so beautiful –
So freaking what! It’s skin deep! She’s just a person! You’re just a person! Everyone is equal!
Okay, okay. You don’t need to yell at me. I –
Ohmygosh
She seems – shy
A little awkward, even
What does a woman like her have to be shy about?
Doesn’t she know she’s a goddess?
Er, I mean, not literally, but…
Yes. She is shy. And what does that tell you?
That… you were right? That she’s just a normal person and I shouldn’t have put her on a pedestal?
Exactly! But that’s okay. She seems really nice anyway.
Yeah, she does
I want to talk to her
I almost feel worthy now…
Go for it.
Wavy black hair
Lean angular face
Hypnotic brown eyes
Attributes of a really nice girl
You should ask her out.
Hahahaha no.
